
The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vincent Waiswa Bagiire has revealed that Uganda will only host a selected category of rejected immigrants from the United States of America on a temporary basis.Bagiire noted that the country would prefer to host deported immigrants from African countries while immigrants with past criminal records and unaccompanied children will not be accepted to stay in the country. In a statement released via the Ministry X handle on Thursday, Bagiire noted that the country will host the refugees I accordance to a concluded bilateral cooperation between Uganda and the United States for cooperation in the examination of protection requests. “The Agreement is in respect of Third Country Nationals who may not be granted asylum in the United States but are reluctant to or may have concerns about returning to their countries of origin” he said. Mr Bagiire added, “This is a temporary arrangement with conditions including that individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted. Uganda also prefers that individuals from African countries shall be the ones transferred to Uganda”. Mr Bagiire further noted that the two parties are working out the detailed modalities on how the agreement shall be implemented.
