Apex Media CEO Isaac Ssegawa Says Copyright Is Vital but “Uganda Isn’t Yet Ready”

Kampala, Uganda | September 11, 2025

New Apex Media Services CEO, Isaac Ssegawa, has spoken out on Uganda’s copyright system, saying that while copyright is a good and necessary concept, Uganda has not yet reached the level where musicians can truly benefit from it.

Speaking during a recent media appearance, Ssegawa said that most Ugandan artists currently earn more from performances and exposure than from copyright royalties. He credited radio and TV stations as the most important platforms in helping artists become popular.

“Uganda is not yet at the level where copyright brings big earnings. Artists who have allowed their music to be played freely on radio and TV have gained popularity, bookings, and branding opportunities,” he said.

“Those who demand payment before promotion are still struggling to be known. It’s the media houses that introduce these artists to the public,” he added.
